EIGHT VIGNETTES (2025)

for unaccompanied alto saxophone

Eight Vignettes explores the lyrical and textural capabilities of the alto saxophone through contrasting styles inspired by historic saxophone masters, minimalist composers, electronic dance music, serialist techniques, and singer-songwriter lyricism. These pieces may be performed as a complete set or individually, offering flexibility for both practice and performance. This project was supported by a Flint Initiative Grant from Oberlin Conservatory.

Card game song (2023)

for creative ensemble

Drawing inspiration from the structure and unpredictability of traditional playing card games, Card Game Song blurs the line between performance and play, offering a performance experience that is sonically, visually, and theatrically stimulating. Written for one dealer, or collaborative conductor, and an open number of “players” with instruments, the piece combines rich text-based instructions, reminiscent of game rules, with graphic multiple graphic scores. As the dealer distributes a standard deck of 52 playing cards in a randomized and uncontrollable order, players consult an intricate key—linked to numbers, suits, and face cards—to generate elaborate instructions for guided improvisation. The result is a flexible and dynamic performance that lasts approximately 10 minutes, or until the entire deck has bean dealt.
